I had to DVR the inauguration so I didn’t get to watch it until last night. Imagine my surprise when I watched President Obama give a ringing endorsement of yesterday’s post. (maybe his speech writers read tipping dinos?
)
To quote Obama in his innaugural address: “in America, greatness isn’t given; it is earned!”
Amen.
a husband, dad, and follower of Jesus who is passionate about teaching and leading well. i love the church, urban culture and espresso. downtown phoenix arizona is my ‘hood.

you are… the Obama whisperer.
Obama is so smart…!
Good point!
Somewhere the ‘Twilight Zone’ theme is playing.
Very humble Mr. Obama:)
I don’t think he’s being humble, I think he’s trying reign in the extreme fans that are putting him on a pedastal only Jesus can live up to. He doesn’t want that, so yes, he is wise enough to know he’s not the savior so many seem to have mistaken him for (I hate ending a sentence with a preposition).
… for whom so many seem to have mistaken him? Wow, I have an English Lit. degree and I can’t seem to say that right. Must be all the pseudoephedrine hcl. If only I were as smart as BHO.
I personally dont put Pres. Obama on any pedestal…nor would I ever compare him to Jesus..I have no doubts that he will make mistakes:).. your right I think he does realize he is not the savior..so he is humbly saying now..he has to “earn” any credit for greatness(which greatness probably isnt even the right word to use) just yet. I also have never heard out of anyones mouth that they think he is the savior..but mabye you have..lol
I keep hearing references to ‘so many people’ mistaking Obama as a savior. I honestly don’t get it…and I don’t see it. If it’s true it is an indictment against the Church and those of us who claim to know the risen Lord.
If there are factions of people ‘out there’ that are confused about Obama’s role in the world…and look to him to ‘save’…we as Christ Followers need to step up and make sure that we are living our lives in a way fully glorifying to God and worhty of the call that we have received in Christ Jesus. Hopefully those of us who profess to follow Jesus…will begin to look and act so much like Him…that people all around us will see the reflection of God in us…His church/people. We are often the only ‘Jesus’ people will see and experience tangibly…If the light of Christ Jesus lives inside of us…and we endeavor to shine that light outward to a hurting sick world…there will be no question as to who the “Savior” is…and who is simply the President of the USA
Honestly I have heard more people say Obama is the antichrist…but never the savior.
i think AD has a good point though. think about the hysteria surrounding Obama. it is different. pay attention to how much you see his face on tshirts, posters, bumperstickers, etc. in places like NYC and LA, his face is everywhere. this is different than our past presidents. i’ve found myself taken by the mass of obama stuff out there, again with his likeness on it (not just his name). i know the historical angle…i get that arguement. I guess i’m not as quick to dismiss AD’s comments as some might be.
I do agree with AD somewhat and can understand where he is coming from…I think there probably are to many things out there that are “glorifying” him if you will..and yes probably is more because of the historical angle…but to say that people think he is Jesus..well you could say that about celebraties and sports figures as well..they are everywhere..even more so..but do people think they are Jesus? Are we also forgetting the “Viva Bush” bumper stickers? Theres always going to be “idolatry” if you will.
I think it’s more the language used that I dismiss( words like hysteria…savior etc). Could there be any justifiable reason for the behavior you all are seeing?
I agree that this election was/is different. There does seem to be a greater demand for ‘Obama’ stuff in some areas of the country. This too shall pass. Americans are fickle.
You do see more t-shirts and buttons etc in large cities like NY and L.A…probably also in Chicago, San Fran, Seattle, Miami, Detroit etc…as well. Do you think that could be because those cities tend to be more racially diverse? It’s been pointed out in past blog entries…that more blacks tend to vote Democratic overall…and thus connect in a way with this bi-racial democratic president (whether we whites get it or not) than any other president in history?
Do you think that any of the hype and media frenzy could be celebratory…connected to the widespread disappointment and disillusionment countless Americans have had with the Bush administration after 8 yrs? I’m a registered Republican and I couldn’t stomach more of ‘the same’…I voted out of my ‘party’ as did many of my friends…for the first time ever!
Don’t you think it’s possible that the historical nature of this election has driven a great deal of the marketing…considering our political history and civil rights issues? I sure do.
If you think the “hysteria” surrounding President Obama is confusing and over the top……just wait until we have our first woman president…or The Cardinals win the Superbowl…you haven’t seen anything yet. (o;
BTW I am a registered Republican..have always voted Republican..I may have even possibly considered McCain had he not had Palin on the ticket…it was a hard choice this election that is for sure. My husband voted Nader.. I know more people this yr that crossed the party line because of what has happend over the last 8 yrs.
I do give props to some good things George Bush has done..forgiving debt relief in Africa..as well as addressing the AIDS issues over there and changing some of the abortion laws here. I agree soon enough the hype over Obama will die down…soon we will be hearing about his short comings I have no doubt.:)…lol
