The other day our 5 year old boy was agitating his 2 year old sister by pushing her sippy cup away from her. Every time he pushed it away, she let loose a nice calming high-pitched ear-piercing shrill. Every parent loves it when their kids peel the paint with their screaming. As you might imagine, I asked my son to stop. To which he promptly responded to by pushing her cup again, this time, with one finger. When I brought this violation to his attention he responded with disbelief, “Dad, I didn’t PUSH it; I POKED it!” Oh yes, how could I be so dumb?
Funny thing is we do the same thing with God. God gives clear direction and makes His wishes known yet we walk as close to the line of sin as we possibly can. We may not push but we poke. It is as if we believe that God is withholding something from us that will make us happier. How’d we get so messed up? A God who IS love somehow has decided to torture us? Hmmmm, that makes lots of sense.
For those that have walked on the other side of what God wants and experienced the hollow promises of the world, it is often easier for them to cling tighter to God. Those who have grown up and have played church a little are often the ones that tip-toe the line and never fully experience the life that Christ has for them. Take it from me; God’s life for you is much better than anything this world can give you. He’s not withholding anything from you that will bring true joy.
So, how close are we walking to the line of sin? Pushing? Poking? Let’s run from the line and get as close to God as possible and experience the coolest, most complete life possible.
