If you’ve ever seen Finding Nemo (and who hasn’t?) then you might remember the seagulls who knew one word and knew it well: “mine.”  Whenever food was in sight, it was “mine, mine, mine.” I remember taking a trip to San Diego not long after that movie and having our lunch stolen by a bunch of filthy gulls and that scene became all the more real to me. Mine. Mine. Mine.

As much as I had to admit it, I fight the urge to claim “mine” all of the time. Of course, we humans are a  little more subtle about it. But for me, it surfaces when I want people to know that was MY idea.  Or, when MY time is getting encroached on I can get really irritated. Of course, I often want MY opinion to be heard. I’ve been praying lately that God would give me the power to deny MYself more and more each day.  “If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for Jesus you will find it.” (Matt. 10:39) Amen.

What are you saying “mine” to that you need to let go of?

  1. Scotty Dub Said,

This is a tough one, especially for men…I think. Speaking for myself and my own control issues, I need to be constantly reminded to give things over to God. When I do, he does a much better job with them than I can ever do.

My big one continues to be money/finances. I may be good at a lot of things, but hanging on to money is not one of them…yet. The more Deb and I work together and more importantly turn it all over to God, the more he is able to show us glimpses of what he can do in our lives, but we have to give it to him, wait on him (always a tough one) and not try to take it back. That’s a daily battle.
