On our hunt for the morning fix, we bypassed the corporate cup in search for a local/homegrown variety. We stumbled upon the perfect spot, Late for the Train Cafe. The cafe is in an old turn of the century store front, the perfect setting for a great quad shot with room (for the taste, not the cream) americano. The cool surprise came in the tshirt I picked up there. All it says on the front is ‘Caffeine’ and on the back is a drawing of the chemical makeup of caffeine. Simple. Perfect. That one word, ‘Caffeine’, got me thinking…what is my ‘Caffeine?’ You know, what makes me go? What is it that fuels what you do? People that know what drives them are the people who make a difference. They change the world. If you don’t know what fuels you, you’ll never make a difference. You’ll follow those that do.
I spent some time in Flagstaff, AZ ("Flag," as it is known by the locals) recently with my wife. It is a cool little mountain town with a cozy, historic downtown.

inertia ends
Having and doing life’s “what” without a”why” is a bit like pushing one of my son’s wind-up cars backwards so it can propel itself forward. At the beginning there seems plenty power to go forever but quickly depends solely on its inertia from the power it had a few seconds ago.
Similarly, it can be easy to find ourselves running on just inertia: yesterday’s good decision, last week’s networking relationships, all of last year’s successes, or last decade’s irrelevant vision/mission statement. however all of them combined do nothing for our today (tomorrow’s yesterday)!
Without the why (a purpose, a passion – something that gets us up smiling every morning) in place to drive us daily to continue with those decision, relationships, vision, etc., we end up running on a sorry excuse for passion: Inertia from past passions. And inertia ends.
Our caffiene; our passion and “why” must be an engine – constantly propelling us toward the “whats” in our lives.
Because the “whats” (especially the “whos”) in our lives are much too important to not treat them with a fresh and passionate “why”!
